History of Peter Claver
Saint Peter Claver was the son of a Catalonian farmer. He was born
at Verdu in 1581 and died September 8, 1654. He obtained his first
degree at the University of Barcelona. At the age of 20 he entered
the Jesuit novitiate at Tarragona. In 1610, he landed at Cartagena,
where for 44 years he was the apostle of the Negro slaves. By its
position in the Caribbean sea. Cartagena became the chief slave mart
of the new world.
Although a very timid man Peter Claver worked tirelessly to help
ease the suffering of the slaves aboard the incoming ships. He would
row out to meet the ships taking food and medicines to tend to their
sicknesses. He did this without any support from any man. He made
his efforts known to the enslaved that he would act as their voice
in defense of their rights.
During his life he baptized and instructed in the faith more than
300,000 African slaves. He was beatified July 16, 1850, by Pius IX,
and canonized January 15, 1888 by Pope Leo XIII. His feast day is
celebrated on September 09.
The Knights of Peter Claver is a Catholic Fraternal organization

Like most ideas some survive and others pass on to dust. Our local
chapter was one such idea. When attending a Convocation in Columbus,
Ohio to enhance our church experience. Among the attendee's was an
astonishing group of women dressed in white, standing tall and looking
proud! Our future Grand Lady Rita Martin, was mesmerized! Her thoughts
and questions, who are they, what do they do, how can I become one
of the ladies?
Thus begins the journey of KPC of St Joseph of the West End #363.
Although, we were not the first KPC order at St Joe's. We will
celebrate our 10th anniversary in February 2010. Along
with being the official
2010 Conference Host. So come on and, "Savor the Flavor
of Claver."
